ACCU was founded in 1952 as the Alpena General Hospital Federal Credit Union. Operations were conducted from the desk of Evelyn Schrader, who served as the comptroller of Alpena General Hospital.
In 1968, the credit union transitioned from a federal charter to a state charter, marking an important milestone in its growth.
As membership continued to expand, the bylaws were amended in 1977 to include all medical personnel in Alpena County. At that time, the organization was renamed the Alpena County Medical Credit Union. That same year, the credit union purchased its first building at 129 E. Campbell Street.
In 1987, the credit union relocated to its current location, further strengthening its presence in the community.
A significant expansion occurred in October 2002, when membership eligibility was extended to anyone who lived, worked, owned property, or worshipped in Alpena County.
In 2006, the organization adopted the name Alpena Community Credit Union (ACCU). Membership eligibility was also expanded beyond Alpena County to include residents of Alcona, Montmorency, and Presque Isle counties.
Today, ACCU continues to build on its strong foundation of service, providing financial solutions and personalized support to members throughout Northeast Michigan.
